First review from test of final prototype V2 Split Gearbox

24. 04. 2015

Hello everybody,

some of you are already waiting for new product from RetroARMS company - split v2 gearbox with quick spring change system. I had been honoured to test this beautifully machined piece. I note that further information include prototype and final release might have minor differences. It will come for example with black anodizing, improved latch system, deeper grooves for leading cables around gearbox etc.

I received the gearbox and had one day for testing. As a gun I have chosen my GP M4 TROY. I disassembled former v2 RetroARMS gearbox, which has absolutely no signs of any wear after ten thousands shoots, and started installation of lower part of the gearbox. It hosts gears as every gun's gearbox of v2 type.

After assembling lower gearbox with RetroARMS and SHS parts, precise gears shimming I got very smooth movement as you can see in the video:

Bearing holes are fantastically co-axial.

Lower part was put together by steel screws (included with the gearbox) and we can move onto the upper part. I have great experience with RetroARMS cylinder set combined with piston from the same manufacturer. They fit together nicely without need of any additional modifications. At this point I would like to highlight lite ALU piston head, very though impact surface of the piston head and removed the last but one piston tooth concerning AOE (angle of engagement - more on YouTube). Upper gearbox is connected with CNC hop up chamber. It is reason for perfect co-axiality, which will lead to higher performance and reliable magazine feed. I believe that you know great regulation system of Prowin chamber. RetroARMS uses the same with some improvements - choice of custom levers, rubber band against BBs falling out,...

Upper part is simply put onto the lower and is secured by back gun pin in the gun body. Gears must be in position of beginning the cycle of catching the piston. Both halves have no clearance at all, everything sits as it is meant to. I made only minor adjustments during installation which can't be avoided with cnc gearbox.

Change of upper part is obtained by removing butt stock tube, knocking out the pin and sliding of the upper body with outer barrel and forearm.

At the very end I would like to thank to guys from RetroARMS in Brno for shown trust and next amazing product, which will be very likely to strongly influence airsoft market. I can - without any doubts - highly recommend this best manufactured v2 gearbox to everybody.
